World's Electric Grids Vulnerable to Solar Storms This Weekend

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a rare geomagnetic storm watch for this weekend, the first in 20 years. Northern Lights  (aurora borealis) may be seen as far south as Alabama.

The concern is the solar storm could wreak havoc on our electrical grid and disrupt power and communications. Satellites located high in the atmosphere are particularly vulnerable, because they are closer.

"This is an unusual and potentially historic event.

Clinton Wallace, Director, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center
