Video Land Memories can Catapult Your Spiritual Development.

I visited HIgh Tor this past Labor Day weekend and shot a few YouTube Shorts.

The one below is of a large stone mound in the Keepers Area that has been disfigured badly over the years. The Land Memories still remain strong.

Sacred Sites Update--Followup to High Tor's Keepers Area

A couple of weeks ago I posted Sacred Sites Update--High Tor's Keeper's Area that gates on the dirts road that traverses the Keeper's Area at HIgh Tor were gone. I went back the other day and found out that I was wrong: one of the posts had fallen the other is still upright.

So if you can find the posts continue to use the area between them as a Welcome Circle.

I also cut down a path through the reeds from the roundabout parking area towards the Keepers Area. So there is a clearer path to get to the Keepers Area from the roundabout off of South Hill Road. The brush is still high, but it is doable.

Sacred Sites Update--High Tor's Keeper's Area

I visited the Keepers Area of High Tor (Page 310-318 of Sacred Sites in North Star Country).  Here are a few observations:

Brush Was High. I entered from the parking area with the roundabout off of South Hill Road.

The fields had not been mowed in some time and the weeds were very high. This made movement difficult at times, especially when I was returning and walking uphill. You never know what you get with the fields. I imagine that they provide great cover for wildlife. I found numerous bedding spots for deer.

I could not find the old gates along the road that served as a Welcome Area. They may have been removed, more likely are located above the point I entered. I had not entered the Keepers through the fields in several years.

Sadly, one of the first things I found was that a large tree had fallen on the large stone mound covering several Earth Chakras (7 if I remember correctly).

In the picture below my backpack is situated in one of the depressed areas where I believe pilgrims sat.

The vibe was great in this area.

That was not the case in farther down as I noted in Sacred Sites. Not much change.

That is the area of the 3 standing stones marking the intersection of three ley lines, or spirit lines, as I postedTriangle of Stones & Mounds at South Hill (Hi Tor DEC Forest) in the Keepers Area

I hope to go back and explore some more soon.

Sacred Sites Update--HIgh Tor's Finger Lakes Trail

This past Saturday I walked the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) in NYS DEC's HIgh Tor Wildlife Management Area, pages 318- 321, of Sacred Sites in North Star Country.

Sadly, the first (page 320) Field of Consciousness(FOC)  that you encounter on the trail has lost a lot of its vibrancy, or vibe. It is a dramatic loss, but it is still positive.

The other FOC farther down the trail on a peninsula of sorts still hums and has a very positive vibe. Below is a picture of the manitou in the FOC and in my book. This is great place to meditate at.

Ramapo Walls and Stone Mounds at Harriman Park, NYS--Part IV Stone Mounds

Just about all of the stone mounds had depressed, or dimpled areas. As previously noted I believe that pilgrims would sit in the depressed areas.

Pepper (white dog) and Jaeda Bear (black dog) sitting in two of the several depressed areas of a stone mound.

Another angle of the picture above it.

I am very familiar with stone mounds with depressed ares having found them in numerous places;
High Tor NYS DEC Wildlife Mgmt. Area in Middlesex, NY,
Whangtown Stone Chambers, Part III(of VII)--The St... NY
Part II Stonewall/Ohiopyle Survey--Carrion Run West Cairn Fields WV
Part IV Stonewall Ohiopyle Survey--Ohiopyle State Park PA
As well as NH and VT,

Although it is not clear cut there is a Manitou Stone behind Pepper to the right. The upright flat stone that looks like a grave marking, or headstone.

I found that many of the stone mounds had intricate stone work detailing aspects of Mother Earth. Clearly the treatment of the stone mounds and walls made some of these markings indistinguishable; but they were there.

Large Manitou Stone At High Tor

Yesterday I was in High Tor NYS DEC Wildlife Management Area at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake and came across a very large Manitou Stone pictured below.

It may be a the same one my friend Zac Moore and I found in August of 2010 and posted to my Clarks Gully blog, Orbs, Megalights and Covered Earth Chakras I may have a better picture and will post it If I find it.

HIgh Tor's Stone Mounds--Please SEND A COMMENT TO THE DEC, Life in the Finger Lakes Magazine

Friends,

I will occasionally be blogging for Life in the Finger Lakes magazine. I submitted a few articles to them which they accepted; one of them is below. They said they would like to see  more.

They have an app which you can sign up for to see my and others articles at, https://www.lifeinthefingerlakes.com/high-tors-stone-mounds/

The following is about the Stone Mounds at High Tor NYS DEC Wildlife Management at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake. I ask that you please consider sending an email to the DEC asking them to put special protections on the stone mounds. It can be something simple as, "Please protect the stone mounds at High Tor,' Janice Clip, 56 Rain Str, Syracuse, NY, 13205.

Story by Madis Senner
Photographs by Madis Senner and Peter Shell

Who built all the stone mounds at High Tor NYS Wildlife Management Area at the southeastern end of Canandaigua Lake is a question Dave Robinson asked over 30 years ago and a question that has been dogging me for over a decade. There are hundreds of stone mounds at High Tor in a variety of shapes and forms, with the dominant one being a stone mound with a dimpled or depressed area in its center. As someone who studies and has written about stone structures and sacred sites, I know of no other place in the world that has such a large collection.

Robinson was an amateur archaeologist and member of the New England Antiquities Research Association (NEARA), which is dedicated to the study and preservation of ancient stone structures. He wrote several articles about stone structures in the Finger Lakes for NEARA and for the Crooked Lake Review.

Robinson persuaded an archeologist from the New York State Department of Archeology in Albany to look at a few of the stone piles at South Hill within High Tor. The archaeologist concluded that the piles of stones were not the result of field clearing, but that the stones had been stacked up to form small platforms.

Robinson believed that the stone structures at High Tor were built by the Adena (1,000 BCE to 0 CE). An ancient Native American culture based in Chillicothe, Ohio, in southeast part of the state. Their culture covered an area about  150 miles around Chillicothe. The Adena, along with the Hopewell who followed them, are known as the "Mound Builders" because of their practice of burying their dead in large earthen mounds.

Given that the Seneca believe that they were born on South Hill, why would Robinson conclude that someone else built the stone mounds?

To answer that we turn to two of the Finger Lakes' famous sons.

Arthur C. Parker (1881-1955) was a Seneca who descended from the prophet Handsome Lake and whose father was Ely Parker, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs for President Ulysses S. Grant. He is widely respected for his archaeological work, and did much to educate the public about Native Americans—through his books and through the formation of the Society of American Indians. He lived in Naples, NY, close to High Tor.

Parker was the director of the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences from 1924 to 1945. During his tenure, he ordered an examination of a deceased Native American who had been discovered in 1904 at the bottom of Bare Hill, inside the steep hairpin curve on the North Vine Valley Road in the town of Middlesex a few miles from High Tor. The fellow was found sitting half way up, with one hand holding a pipe. The pipe was determined to be of Adena origin and so it was concluded that he was Adena.

But was he? Or was something else at work? After all, the Adena culture was supposedly confined to the area of greater southeast Ohio.

To answer that question we turn to William Augustus Ritchie (1903- 1995), who worked for Parker at the Rochester Museum at the time.  Ritchie performed over a hundred excavations and was known as a “dirt archaeologist,” preferring to view evidence first hand and to see its relationship to features in the land. He coined the term “archaic” to describe the early development of cultures in the northeast, a term which is widely recognized today. He served as the NYS Archaeologist from 1949 to 1972. He received numerous awards for his work and was loved by many for exposing many of the mysteries hidden in New York and Eastern America.

The fellow found in the Vine Valley along the eastern shore of Canandaigua Lake led Ritchie in 1937 to develop his concept called the Middlesex Focus, Middlesex Phase, or Middlesex Complex after the town where the Adena man holding a pipe was found. Ritchie hypothesized that many of the sites found throughout Eastern America and southern Canada that exhibited Adena-like mortuary practices did so because of the interactions between various Native American cultures during the Early Woodland Period (1,000 BC to 0 AD.) In other words, because of trade, travel, and communication between culture, practices, customs, and artifacts became intermingled.

So when a site was found exhibiting Adena-like mortuary practices or artifacts, it began to be referred to as a Middlesex Focus site, after the town of Middlesex, NY. The term is still employed today.

Ritchie expanded his Middlesex Complex hypothesis to say it was actually the migration of Adena, not interactions between cultures that was behind the Adena mortuary practices and artifacts found far from their base in southeast Ohio. Later, his partner in this hypothesis, Don Dragoo, changed his mind and recanted his belief in the migration theory.

So High Tor has a very rich history. It straddles the towns of Middlesex and Naples and is a stone’s throw from where the original half-seated Native American was found.

It is extremely likely that the stone mounds in High Tor were used for ceremonial purposes. There is a certain “je ne sais quoi” about the mounds and all of High Tor (the geographical space) -- what some may call its "vibe." Whenever I visit the area, I say a prayer or bring an offering, and often meditate to show reverence and respect. I ask that you consider doing the same when you visit. Treat them as if they were holy.

I write about the stone mounds at this time because NYS DEC opened up a public comment period this spring regarding High Tor’s future use. While the stone mounds are not a typical issue, and they do have some protections, we can never be too safe. You might contact the NYS DEC (email R8.UMP@dec.ny.gov) and ask that added protection measures be put in place to protect the stone mounds within it.

While it might seem that placing extra precautions to protect the stone mounds is a bit too much, I will point out two things.

In his article for the Crooked Lake Review, which talks about the stone mounds at South Hill, Robinson tells how two stone walls along Bare Hill that he assumed were associated with an old Adena Fort were taken by the town of Middlesex Highway Dept. in the 1920s and used for fill.

Similarly, Jason Jarrell, who lives in West Virginia, told me earlier this year that hundreds, if not thousands, of stone mounds that once lay on mountain tops in West Virginia were destroyed during clear-top coaling mining operations in recent years. Jarrell and his wife, Sarah Farmer, study and write about ancient cultures and are regularly featured in Ancient America, a magazine I have written for as well.

Interestingly, West Virginia has created several trails dedicated to observing stone cairns within Stone Wall Jackson Lake Park. Perhaps they provide a model for the preservation of the stone mounds at High Tor and an avenue to generate tourism and be of economic benefit to the area.

I encourage you to visit High Tor for a walk in the woods and soak up the wonder of its many stone mounds. They are all over. Try as the Native Americans say to “act in a sacred manner” when you are there and treat everything with reverence and respect. And please email the NYS DEC (R8.UMP@dec.ny.gov) and tell them to protect the stone mounds at High Tor.

Sacred Sites Update High Tor-Tree Still Blocking Trail

The large tree that fell back in March blocking the trail to upper Clarks Gully and the beginning of the herd path to climb South Hill has not been removed. You can either maneuver around it or climb the embankment on lower Clarks Gully. Unfortunately both of these alternatives involve climbing steep embankments.

From High Tor Area

A few weeks back I had a chance to survey on private property close to High Tor NYS Wildlife Management Area at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. My Clarks Gully Blog is focused on the stone and aspects of Mother Earth found at High Tor.

Please contact the DEC during their current comment period to ask for additional protections be put in place for the stone mounds at High Tor. To learn more, http://www.hightor.org
Email the DEC, R8.UMP @dec.ny.gov

Here are some pictures

A trio of Manitou Stones that have begun tilting over the millennia. This is the first time that I have ever seen such a conglomeration of Large Manitou Stones. I regularly find groupings of small Manitou Stones.

One of the Manitou Stones was still standing fairly well.

Help Preserve the Stone Mounds at HIgh Tor NYS DEC WMA--Naples, NY (Canandaigua Lake)

Help us preserve the stone structures and maintain the vibe at High TOR NYS Wildlife Management Area in Middlesex (and the town of Naples) NY; at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake. Please contact the NYS DEC during their current public comment period and tell them to put added protections on the many stone mounds and standing stones there. See HighTor.org

High Tor NYS Wildlife Management Area is an ancient sacred site that needs to be preserved. Specifically its hundreds of stone mounds and thousands of standing stones--that are thousands of years old--need to have additional protections. The NYS DEC has opened up a public comment period about High Tor\'s future for the next ten years. Email them and tell them to put added protections on the stone mounds; preferably get them placed on the National Register of Historic Places. We also ask that you tell that activities should be limited in line with its history of being an ancient sacred site\--no logging, or other such activities that harm the flora or the fauna at High Tor.

Stonewall Jackson Park in West Virginia shows what is possible. They created a series of trails through their woods focused on the many stone mounds that are there, with names such as the Cairns Trail.

Sacred Site Update--High Tor--Upper Clarks Gully, South Hill Climb

A large tree has fallen blocking the trail to the Upper Ledges and access to the herd path to climb South Hill. You can walk around it, but its some work. I would expect that the tree will be gone in the next few months.

Sacred Sites Update--High Tor's The Ledges, A Thin Veil, A Powerful Spot Found

Wow. Last week in our continuing effort to catalogue the stone structures at the Ledges (pages 304-308 of Sacred Sites in North Star Country) we came upon a particularly powerful place on the far end of the upper Ledge. A place where people must have prayed, done cermony and vision quested with great intensity for centuries. A place that has fortunately maintained its spiritual integrity over the millennia.

It is an open doorway to altered states of consciousness, other realities, a place to get great insights, have visions, have mystical and hallucinogenic experiences....Some would say it has a thin veil, others might call it a portal, others might just feel it has a great vibe. I still don't know what to make of it.

The Area of the Thin Veil.  There are 5 staffs marking the 5 stone mounds in the area. Janice Carr is in the front holding one staff. Behind her to the right is a staff by itself and I am in the distance holding another. Behind her to the right next to the trees is a staff by itself, marking another stone mound. Photographer, Peter Shell, is holding a staff marking another stone mound. There are three energy vortices marked by the black dog(Jaeda Bear), white dog(Pepper) and the white paper/orange cushion. There are several other  mounds close by going the other way.

The three energy vortices are a testament to the power of the place and that spiritual activities took place there. Sensations for the three of us ranged  from feeling very charged to being in another place/dimension while there. One assumes that this place was intentionally created to have pilgrims experience altered states of consciousness. It certainly is conducive to pilgrims having visions or hallucinogenic experiences. I cannot imagine what it was like in its peak.

What is notable is that, while being in the space certainly enlightens/charges you up, those sensation do not linger as profoundly as with other aspects of Mother Earth. It seems that when you enter the space after some time you go into an altered state of consciousness, but once you step out things are significantly reduced.

What you experience can vary. You may feel little, or nothing at at all. You may just feel an energy burst. Or you have a profound mystical experience....What you feel depends upon your connection to Mother Earth, your spiritual acumen.....

It can take some time before you experience, or feel, the affects of the space. So give it some time before it works its magic.

What is It?
There appears to be something more of Mother Earth there besides Earth Chakras. Some other aspect of Her subtle body. I did find something. But....I think that the real power of the place rests in the imprints left there by visiting pilgrims from their spiritual practices over thousands of years. The three natural vortices (energy vortices) tell you that serious spiritual activities took place there and certainly add to the feeling of the place.

A thin veil? Certainly the veil to higher realities, certainly exists there. Traditionally I have found them to be very small pockets--nothing of this size.

I wonder if we have discovered some other new co-creation beyond natural vortices (energy vortices) with Mother Earth? Something on the next rung of the ladder in our co-creating with Mother Earth. As I  noted in my dedication of Vortices and Spirals and in other writings when you, "Love, give, heal, do unto others, practice ahimsa, pray, meditate and Mother Earth may bless you with a vortex." So a natural vortex is one of the first rungs on the ladder of co-creation with Mother Earth, have we just discovered the next rung up?

I have no idea. This is only one of the questions I have been asking myself since. I certainly feel blessed to have this spot revealed to us.

Powerful Imprints
As I noted in my intro to High Tor in Sacred Sites in North Star Country,
“Imagine if you could go back in time 2,000, or even 3,000 years, or more, to when the mound builders inhabited much of the Eastern United States. Imagine if you could visit one of their sacred sites and feel the charged atmosphere of their spiritual practices as you sat next to one of their mounds. Can you feel the chills running up and down your spine as you cry for a vision and tap into the collective consciousness of the thousands that have been here centuries before you? Feel their thoughts, as they help elevate your consciousness, bring you closer to the Great Spirit, open up lines of communication to other worlds, and give you visions while healing you.”  Page (292-293)
This is probably one of the best places to have such an experience.

If You Visit
A map of High Tor is located on page 298 of Sacred Sites in North Star Country. Directions to the Ledges is on page 305.

Make sure to spend some time in the Welcome Circle as noted on Page 306 of Sacred Sites in North Star Country. This is critical, otherwise you may diminish the vibe; and it is the vibe, and not the all the stone structures that are what makes the Ledges so precious.

Smudge yourself, say a prayer, meditate for a while in the Welcome Circle.

Bring a small offering, a flower...Spread some tobacco. It's not so much what you bring, as it is that you show reverence and respect.

Act in a Sacred Manner while there--Keep your thoughts positive, focus on the divine.....Do not bring your cell phone or other electronic devices harmful to our Mother. Limit your picture taking, or balance them with a prayer.

If you have to go to the bathroom do so far from the holy area.

Make sure you can drive after you leave. Bring some food, preferably root vegetables to ground you if necessary. Generally people maintain mental acuity. Just make sure if is safe for you to drive.

This is an incredible find. I share this with you because I want you to be able to experience it as well. It is a gift to us from the pilgrims that have visited before. A gift for you to experience. A gift that you can share with others that will follow by acting in a sacred manner when visiting and praying and meditating while you are there.

Remember it's all about the Vibe

Blessings,
madis

PS I encourage you to visit soon. I have written about this for several articles and I imagine over time people will begin to frequent the Ledges. Enjoy before the chances for solitude are reduced.

Whangtown Stone Chambers, Part III(of VII)--The Stone Pile

What drew me to Whangton was a picture of a stone mound I saw on the NEARA webpage

Whangtown Stone Mound

It was very reminiscent of the stone mounds at High Tor; a dimpled center and appeared to be covering some Earth Chakras. Here are some examples from my Clarks Gully Blog:
The Ledges, Marked Energy Lines, Fare ye well--May 11, 2017 Visit
Ledges Area--Another Example of Incredible Stone Work

Here are some pics

Staffs mark a few of the Energy Lines; many more were not marked. Three yellow tapes breaking from the red and white staff mark Earth Chakras. Notice the width on the left side.
It was one of the largest stone mounds I had ever seen. It was also connected to a very large stone wall; which begged the question where does the fence end and stone mound begin?

 Pepper in the dimpled center.

The front of the mound. The staff is in increments of 1 foot.

Janice Carr saying a blessing and laying a red carnation in the center. She is preparing to spread some tobacco. We said prayers and gave blessings at all of the structures. Sadly because we were time constrained we did not meditate at any location.

Sacred Sites Update--High Tor NYS DEC Forest and Bears

We were at High Tor (Middle Sex, Naples NY) today working on our survey of the Ledges when we ran into a local land owner who said was having troubles with a bear raiding his bee hives.  I have been going to High Tor for over 10 years and have never seen a bear.

I mention this not to scare you but, to give you a heads up. I always have bear bells on my dogs so that I know where they are and they alert other animals as well. The chances of seeing a bear are extremely remote.

If you know me well, you know I always say "a good day in the woods is when I don't see anything" (animal--bear, deer, coyote, raccoon, squirrel, chipmunk......)

PER THE NYS DEC WEBPAGE

Black Bear Encounters
If you Encounter a Bear:
Never Approach, Surround, or Corner a Bear - Bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened. Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective.

Never Run from a Bear- stay calm, speak in a loud and calm voice, slowly back away and leave the area.

Use Noise to Scare away Bears from Your Campsite- yell, clap, or bang pots immediately upon sighting a bear near your campsite.

Do Not Throw Your Backpack or Food Bag at an Approaching Bear

Doing so will only encourage bears to approach and "bully" people to get food.

By teaching a bear to approach humans for food, you are endangering yourself, other campers/residents, and the bears.

Back to the Ledges at High Tor--What Stone Work

Peter Shell and I were back at High Tor NYS Forest in the Ledges area photographing and cataloguing    stone mounds.  As I have been posting about recently there is some incredible stone work found there. I wanted to share some pictures with you.

Below are pictures of stone mound #19.  It is an oblong shaped stone mound with a dimpled center. There are also many appendages that cover Energy Lines. There is an  elevated front entryway. Not sure if this was to mark Energy Lines, or to create a step up before entry.

The stone mound covers numerous Energy Lines. In fact we ran out of staffs to mark all the Energy Lines and ended up to resorting to using sticks and wrapping them with yellow tape.

There are only 2 Earth Chakrasoff one main Energy Lines marked by yellow tape; offshoots from the dark blue and white staff.

Staffs mark the Energy Lines.

This is the right side of the first picture. Notice how raised stones mark the Energy Lines. Even on the ground to the right you can see stones marking Energy Lines.

In the picture above the tape attached to the dark blue and white staff mark Energy Lines beginning from an Earth Chakra. A vortex, or Earth Chakra is found at the origination point of the new Energy Line. Notice how stones are used to mark these Energy Lines originating from the Earth Chakra.

Video of Ledges Area Survey, Stone Mound #5, Has Been Posted on YouTube

A video of Ledges Area Survey, Stone Mound #5, has Been Posted on YouTube. We are in the process of cataloguing the stone structures at the Ledges Area of High Tor.

Because the Ledges Area contains numerous Earth Chakra, and the bulk of stone mounds are located over Earth Chakras you might wish to first see a short video I put together a few years back on Earth Chakras.
Earth Chakras--Vortexes of Energy Circulation

This video looks at stone mound #5 and shows the various, Earth Chakras, Energy Lines, etc that are associated with that stone mound. It is an incredible demonstration of the workmanship ancient cultures; even though leaves block your view, much can be gleaned. This is the first in a series of video's of our survey of Ledges. Thanks to Peter Shell and Janice Carr for their help. REMEMBER IT'S ALL ABOUT THE VIBE!
